Cotoneaster is often thought of as a ho-hum garden basic, but 'Tom Thumb' Creeping Cotoneaster deserves a second glance and more. It is certainly an excellent ground cover and often is used on hillsides for erosion control. But placed in container planters, hanging baskets, or on retaining walls, 'Tom Thumb' will cascade down the sides, providing a lovely green carpet of foliage in the spring and summer, a display of brilliant red leaves in the fall, then an intricate herringbone pattern of bare branches over the winter. Deer-resistant and drought tolerant once established, Creeping Cotoneaster is an easy-care addition to the garden.
