Use Purple Heart in summer baskets and container planters, then bring it indoors when the temperatures drop in the fall.

ClosePurple Heart, aka Tradescantia pallida 'Purpurea,' adds an unusual structure and vibrant color to summer gardens. We use it almost exclusively in hanging baskets and container planters, though it could be used as a sort of ground cover in borders, twining its way through other shade-loving plants. Bright pink flowers accent the tips of the stiff purple stems throughout the summer and up until freeze. Stems may be pinched back after blooming to encourage more compact new growth. Bring Purple Heart indoors at the end of summer, or take cuttings and grow them inside for next year's garden.
