Green rosettes with red tips will often change color with the seasons, but 'Tip Top' Hens and Chicks will remain evergreen year-round.
Available in store
CloseHens and Chicks don't seem like an optimal choice for the rainy Pacific NW, but they do amazingly well here when planted in well-draining soil and are given ample sun. 'Tip Top' is a standout addition to container planters, hanging baskets, and those dry, gravelly borders, with its smooth leaves morphing from deep red to green with red tips as the weather changes. Pink summertime flowers bring on the bees and butterflies, but the "hen" will die after flowering, leaving all its chicks to take its place. 'Tip Top' is an excellent ground cover in xeriscapes and needs little water once established, but please, water regularly when first planted!
