Red-tipped, medium-sized rosettes produce many "chicks" that will literally take the place of the "hen" after it flowers and dies.
Available in store
CloseHens and Chicks are often the go-to ground cover for those sunny, under-watered, gravelly spots in the garden. Poorly draining clay soils may cause the roots of sempervivums to rot out in the winter, so either amend the heck out of area to be planted or plant them in a raised bed or container. We have great success with container planters and hanging baskets jam-packed with various succulents, and 'Dynamo' Hen and Chicks will add rich reds and greens to the mix with its mid-sized hair-lined rosettes. This variety will produce lots of chicks that become hens in their own right, so if any chicks happen to break off, simply snug them back down into the soil and give them a drink of water. Succulents need to become established before being drought tolerant, so please, regularly water newly planted Hen and Chicks when the top inch of soil is dry.
