This Hen and Chicks has a bit of everything - gray-green, medium sized rosettes with red backs and cobwebbing across the middle.
Available in store
CloseHens and Chicks don't seem like an optimal choice for the rainy Pacific NW, but they do amazingly well here when planted in well-draining soil and are given ample sun. 'Ashes of Roses' is a charming addition to container planters, hanging baskets, and those dry, gravelly borders, with its cobwebby tips and red backed, gray-green leaves. Pink summertime flowers bring on the bees and butterflies, but the "hen" will die after flowering, leaving all its chicks to take its place. 'Ashes of Roses' is an excellent ground cover in xeriscapes and needs little water once established, but please, water regularly when first planted!
