For gardeners who aren't always on top of watering, succulents may be their saving grace. Stonecrops, so named for their ability to grow in rocky dry soils, include a wide array of sedums varying in size, color, and texture. 'Lime Twister' Sedum emerges in the spring with lime green and cream leaves that get even brighter in the sun, forming a dense mat of color, six to ten inches high, and spreading up to 18 inches. Clusters of star-shaped, pink flowers bloom in late summer, attracting bees and butterflies. The foliage may take on reddish hues as the temperatures drop, before dying back for the winter. Well-draining soil is a must, so some gardeners may prefer to use 'Lime Twister in container planters or hanging baskets, though it will require more regular watering than if established in the ground, in borders or on retaining walls.
