Vaccinium ovatum 'Cascade Jewel'

For gardeners who want a good looking plant and can eat its fruit as well, 'Cascade Jewel' Evegreen Huckleberry may be just the ticket. Many gardeners are moving in the direction of native plants, partly because of their adaptation to our climate, but to also increase the number of native pollinators. Unfortunately, many native plants just aren't that attractive, so Oregon State University took an Oregon native and developed a cultivar that is just as tough as the original, but has a much better structure, and loads of huckleberries in late summer. The more sun, the more berries, but 'Cascade Jewel' will tolerate part shade without getting leggy. Deer aren't especially fond of this plant, but birds and humans will find the blueberry-like fruits delightful.
