It takes two to make tomatillos, so be sure to get two plants and grow them next to each other!
Product Description
Product Description
Tomatillos are one of those summer crops worth making space for, since availability of the fruits in stores is sometimes unpredictable, and they're as easy to grow as tomatoes. First rule though, is always plant at least two plants because tomatillos are self-incompatible. That is, they cannot self-pollinate, so with a single plant, you may get tons of flowers, but they'll never turn into fruits. Like tomatoes, they do well in full sun. Start fertilizing when blooms appear, and water deeply but infrequently to encourage flowers and fruits.
This Mexican Strain tomatillo produces slightly larger fruits that are more savory in flavor than green tomatillos, so they're prized for salsas, cooked sauces, and in stews. Harvest when the husks become papery, then store in paper bags. Ripe fruits can also be frozen for later use. Remove the husks, wash, dry, then pop into plastic storage containers.
