Strelitzia nicolai

Indoor gardeners may react with shock or delight when told that the Giant Bird of Paradise can reach 20 to 30 feet at maturity, but that applies to Strelitzia nicolai when grown outdoors under ideal conditions. Indoors, one can hope for a large leafed plant, five to eight feet tall and up to three feet wide. Large, paddle-shaped leaves are blue-green in color, and may split as they age. The foliage is similar in looks to banana trees, thus another common name of Wild Banana. This is a slow-grower, and may be moved outdoors during the summer, but needs to come indoors when the temps drop. Strelitzia looks its best with higher humidity, especially when the indoor heat kicks on, so consider investing in an electric humidifier, or place the pot on a pebble tray.
