Golden Thunberg Spirea is a great option for adding spring color to the garden with its willow-like, golden yellow foliage and white flower clusters. Pollinators love the flowers but deer tend to ignore spirea. While it can reach five feet tall and wide at maturity, the shrub may be maintained at a smaller size with strategic pruning of older branches immediately after flowering, or by cutting the entire shrub down to eight inches tall every few years after flowering. As the temps drop, the foliage takes on bronzy hues before dying back for the winter.
