Sempervivum 'Soft Line'

How can something that is so tough can also be soft looking? This succulent is just that, with fine downy cilia lining the leaves, creating an almost velvety look. Primarily green in the growing months, 'Soft Line' may develop pink tinges at the tips of leaves when the temperatures drop. Though drought tolerant when established, hens and chicks need regular water when first planted to become established. Sodden roots during the winter months will almost certainly kill succulents, so container living may be the best choice for hens and chicks unless there is an area in the yard with sandy, gravelly soil that dries out quickly. 'Soft Line' sends out lots of chicks during the growing months, so when the hen flowers and dies, there will be lots of offsets to take its place.
