Sempervivum 'Fuego'

Fuego Hens and Chicks is named in part for its fiery red leaves (fuego = fire), but it's interesting to note that the color of said leaves will change with the seasons, and in response to the amount of sunlight it receives. Search for an image of Fuego, and you'll see a range of color combinations, from a dark red with tips outlined in green, to green and red leaves tipped in red. What is unusual about Fuego is the smooth texture of its leaves, the larger than normal size of the rosettes (for a Hens and Chicks), and the fact that the "hen" sends out much fewer chicks than other varieties. Given its larger size, Fuego would look great in a succulent planter or hanging basket with contrasting colors of sedums and other Hens and Chicks. Put it in a sunny location, don't overdo it with water, and you'll have a happy succulent planter.
