Sempervivum 'Bernstein'

When it comes to Hens and Chicks, it's often difficult to pigeonhole them as having one color of foliage or another, as that can change due to temperature, amount of sunlight, and time of year. Under ideal conditions, 'Bernstein' forms rosettes of gold and bronze, often with a green center. Fine hairs cover the sharply pointed leaves, adding texture to the three-inch rosettes. Succulents don't do well in poorly draining soil, especially in winter, so consider planting 'Bernstein' in a mixed planter, hanging or otherwise, with a variety of succulents. The plants will be happier, and the gardener can enjoy them close up on the patio or hanging in front of a window. As a reminder, all sempervivums flower once, then die, so when a large "hen" starts to grow a tall center, it can be allowed to flower then removed, or it can pre-emptively be taken out, making room for all the chicks to fill in.
