Sedum 'Thunderhead'

'Thunderhead' sedum is one large succulent, with thick stems of gray-green foliage standing two feet tall. Once the flowers begin to emerge in late summer to fall, it may reach 30 inches in height, adding a last blast of color before the dark days of fall and winter descend. Hardy to -30 degrees, 'Thunderhead' usually keeps the flower heads throughout winter, providing snacks for the birds, while the foliage takes on red to purple hues in the fall before dying back. As is true of most succulents, 'Thunderhead' sedum needs well-draining soil, so consider growing this robust succulent in container planters or even hanging baskets.
