Sedum hakonense 'Chocolate Ball'

'Chocolate Ball' sedum is a unique succulent with somewhat contradictory names/traits. Yes, it is recognized as a stonecrop - able to grow in less fertile, gravelly soil - but it actually prefers a bit of shade at the hottest time of the day. Not ball-shaped as the name implies, but more finger-like with thin, needle-like foliage lining the three- to six-inch long stems. The color of this sedum (aka hylotelephium for plant nerds) ranges from chocolatey-brown to bronzy red, depending upon the exposure and season. Like its cousin, 'Angelina,' this variety holds up well during the winter and is considered an evergreen perennial. Not a favorite of deer or rabbits, pollinators are attracted to the small yellow flowers that appear in late summer/early fall. Because sedums grow best in well-draining soil, they do well in container planters, or those less-than-fertile but well-draining spots in the garden, and are indispensable in xeriscapes.
