Product Description
Product Description
The botanical name of this highly ornamental shrub is confusing since there is nothing black (nigra) about it. 'Welsh Gold' elder, aka Sunrise Surprise Golden Elder, is in the same family as the black-leafed elderberry, but has fluorescent yellow-green, lacy leaves, and instead of purple berries, has bright red berries in the fall. 'Welsh Gold' is positively dainty in size compared to other species of Sambucus, forming a mound up to four feet tall and two to three feet wide. It's a lovely choice as a foundation plant or even an informal seasonal hedge. Pruning in the fall or late winter is advised to maintain a denser, more compact shape.
Footnote: birds love the red berries in the fall but humans should not consume them unless cooked.
