Rosmarinus officinalis 'Spice Island' 4 Inch

The internet is a wonderful tool for curious minds, but one must be discerning, as not everything out there is accurate or sometimes, even true. When reading up on 'Spice Island' rosemary, it was reported to grow anywhere from 12 to 18 inches tall up to five or six feet tall, and this from several different reputable sources. What can be stated is that this particular variety has an upright profile with exceptionally flavorful leaves, and has many of the favorable traits of rosemary - drought tolerant once established, beautiful blue flowers that attract pollinators, and is deer resistant.
One thing we have discovered about rosemary is that it generally does well in container planters for a year or two, but then needs to be moved into the ground. 'Spice Island' may last longer in a container planter if it does indeed stay around one to two feet tall, but it will tell you if it needs bigger digs by needing more frequent water and possibly yellowing needles. If you can lift the entire plant from the pot and it's root-bound, that's a definite sign it needs to be re-homed.
Hardy down to 10 degrees, 'Spice Island' may suffer if we have extremely icy/cold winters but should recover once the weather moderates. Good drainage, especially in the winter, helps immensely. It's a wonderful addition to knot gardens and may even be used as an informal low growing hedge that you can, incidentally, eat!
