Polystichum setiferum 'Congestum'

Ferns are a wonderful filler for mixed shade baskets, and evergreen varieties serve equally well in fall/winter baskets and container planters. The dwarf Congested Shield Fern is the perfect size for container planters, providing an eye-catching backdrop for fall/winter annuals such as violas, pansies, and ornamental peppers, and begonias, impatiens, and fuchsias in the spring and summer. Semi-evergreen to evergreen in milder winters, it adds a delightful contrasting texture to evergreen broadleafs such as hebes and hellebores. Once the weather starts to warm again in the spring, simply move this fern to a shadier location, or remake the planter into a shade dweller.
