Pieris japonica 'Enchanted Forest Gay Goblin'

When visitors to the nursery describe their "perfect" plant, they want something evergreen, pretty, tall but not too tall, and fast-growing. This Lily of the Valley shrub checks all the boxes except one - not the fastest shrub in the garden. 'Enchanted Forest Gay Goblin' pieris has the characteristic narrow pointed leaves that stay green and attractive year-round, has eye-catchingly beautiful clusters of deep pink blooms in late winter to early spring, and eventually hits five to seven feet tall and three to five feet wide. So how long does it take for this specimen to reach its full potential? Generally speaking, any shrub or tree that grows less than 12 inches per year is considered slow-growing, but the actual gain in stature depends upon growing conditions, including soil, water, space, and the weather. Under ideal conditions, 'Enchanted Forest Gay Goblin' could be screening out fences, utility boxes, and surrounding homes in less than five years.  
And speaking of environment, this variety prefers protection from the hot afternoon sun and does well with all-day dappled sun as well. Consider growing it in a container planter for a year or two before moving it out into the garden, so its beautiful flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed up close. Early pollinators enjoy the flowers, and deer usually don't find pieris to be their first choice.
