Phormium 'Evening Glow'

New Zealand flax is one of those specimens that often takes gardeners by surprise. One minute it's a vigorous but narrow fan-shaped plant then suddenly, or so it seems, it's gotten several feet wide. 'Evening Glow' has a wonderful blend of sunset colors on upright leaves that can eventually reach three to four feet tall and almost as wide. Plant this variety in the ground as a focal point or foundation plant for year-round interest. When grown in container planters, it develops more slowly, adding dramatic vertical interest. Our Pacific NW winters may damage some of the leaves - simply cut those back to the ground in early spring before new growth emerges.
