Passiflora incarnata

This purple passionflower is something of a surprise for those unfamiliar with this perennial that is actually native to the southeastern United States. Hardy down to -10 to -20 degrees, it pops up in the spring, sending up vines that could reach 10 feet tall in a single season. Fragrant, surreal flowers with threadlike segments and prominent stamens and pistils start blooming in mid-summer and continue on into the fall. Green fruits about the size of a chicken egg ripen to a golden yellow color and are mildly sweet. For those seeking an exotic summertime flower, this passion vine will fill the bill, but with very little effort on the part of the gardener. One caveat - Passiflora incarnata sends out suckers when happy, so be prepared to cut back the roots to keep this perennial contained.
