Northwind Switch Grass can handle wet/clay soil as well as drought, coastal conditions and heavy snow, and is deer-resistant, all elements that may be found in the Pacific NW. 'Northwind' is prized for its sturdy, compact vertical profile, and the airy seed panicles that rise above the blue-green stems in the summer and into the fall. Birds will appreciate the seed heads, and the stems that turn golden in the fall will add visual interest to the garden when most color has disappeared for the winter. Cut back the stems in late winter to early spring before the new growth emerges.
