Fern lovers will often do a double-take on this Royal fern, as the broad, smooth leaflets make it look more like a member of the pea family than a fern, and spore-filled, brown spikes are frankly, rather bizarre looking. That said, the fresh green foliage forms an upright rosette, making it ideal for middle- to back-of-border shade gardens. It handles boggy areas with ease, and will flourish along streams and ponds. If it likes its environment, the Royal Fern could grow up to six feet tall. As are most ferns, this one is deer resistant.
