Musa acuminata 'Dwarf Cavendish'

Dwarf Cavendish Banana is one of those bigger than life type plants that grow readily in frost-free climates and absolutely fascinate Pacific NW gardeners. Massive paddle-shaped leaves emerge with red markings, then mature to solid green, growing on a pseudo-stem that can eventually reach eight to ten feet tall in the ground, and maybe half that height in a large container. Technically a perennial, bananas are frost-tender, and require lots of mulching and shelter from our Pacific NW winters if grown in the ground. Grown in a large pot, determined gardeners may bring it indoors during the cold months as long as they have a very well-lit room. Footnote: while this specimen may produce bananas two to three years after planting, the plant needs protection from winter frost and cold. Any fruit that develops will most likely be much smaller than store-bought bananas.
