Mahonia eurybracteata 'Soft Caress'

Those familiar with Oregon grape may be surprised to find that this lacy-leafed evergreen shrub is in the same genus as the Pacific NW native, and is everything that Oregon grape is not. That is, 'Soft Caress' mahonia has no prickly thick leaves, but soft, almost bamboo-like leaflets. It stays a compact shrub, 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, usually less than half the size of Oregon grape. And unlike Oregon grape, 'Soft Caress' blooms not in the spring, but the fall and winter. This unique mahonia does well in shade gardens, but may flower better if given morning sun and afternoon, or all-day dappled sun. Deer don't care for the fern-like foliage, but pollinators appreciate the late season flowers.
