Liriope spicata

Gardeners often long for evergreen grasses and unfortunately, such a plant doesn't exist here in the maritime Pacific NW. Liriope may be a suitable alternative, with grass-like blades reaching up to 18 inches tall and spreading a foot to two feet wide. It will tolerate full sun when watered regularly but may be happier with protection from late afternoon rays. Rather inconspicuous flower spikes will pop up in late summer to fall, then morph into blue-black berries. Liriope spreads by underground rhizomes, and does well as a ground cover for hillsides or areas that need erosion control. We often use it in year-round planters with satisfying results.
