Lavandula stoechas 'Compact Purple'

Gardeners will often wax poetic about the wonderful traits of English or French lavenders while disregarding the Spanish lavenders. Generally smaller in stature but equally heat- and drought-tolerant, Spanish lavenders have a charm of their own, with two-toned flowers resembling pineapples rising above blue-green foliage from late spring into summer. Just as fragrant and just as powerful a bee magnet, 'Compact Purple' is a bit taller than some other Spanish varieties, growing 14 to 20 inches tall and up to 18 inches wide at maturity. Its tighter profile makes it a great option for container planters, hanging baskets, and in borders, forming an informal low evergreen hedge in the sunniest part of the garden. As is true of all lavenders, 'Compact Purple' does best in well-draining soil, and benefits from a light trim after the blooms have ended.
