Pacific NW gardeners love English lavender for its year-round good looks and fragrant blooms in the spring and summer, but lavender doesn't always appreciate our heavy clay soil. If the roots stay too wet, they will rot, so amend the soil to promote good drainage or grow them in large pots. 'Buena Vista' lavender is a great choice for container gardening, staying under two feet in height and width. And, with its unusual bi-colored flowers (dark blue flowers encased in a deep purple calyx) blooming twice in a year, this variety will be welcome on sunny patios or decks. Don't hesitate to cut the flower stalks for drying or fresh bouquets, and deadhead spent blooms, as this will encourage a second flush of flowers at the end of summer.
