Kniphofia 'Gladness'

Kniphofias, or Poker lilies, are one of those flamboyant summer bloomers that make an entrance during the hottest time of the year, at least here in the Pacific NW. 'Gladness' is one of the shorter varieties, topping out around three feet tall, with torch-like flower stalks rising above the clumps of strappy leaves. Orange buds open to yellow or apricot shades, bringing out hummingbirds and pollinators alike. Not a favorite of deer, it is drought-tolerant once established, and may even stay green during milder winters. Cut flowers for indoor enjoyment and deadhead the spent blooms to prolong the flowering period. Kniphofias won't tolerate soggy soil, especially during the winter, so consider planting them in container planters, or protect the crowns of foliage with lots of mulch in the fall and winter.
