Juniperus squamata 'Blue Carpet'

It's a bit surprising that a juniper would rate an Award of Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society, but 'Blue Carpet' did indeed win in 1993. Low-growing, low-maintenance, drought tolerant once established, and not usually favored by deer, this variety works well as a ground cover and for erosion control, while also looking good! Horizontal branches of silver-blue needles stay below a foot tall, but can eventually spread four to five feet wide. Use it as a trailer in year-round baskets, or on retaining walls. The color will change from silver-blue to blue-green as the temperatures drop, but 'Blue Carpet' will handle it all.
