Jovibarba hirta 'Hedgehog'

This variety of Hens and Chicks is aptly named for the tight, round chicks that remind one of curled up hedgehogs. 'Hedgehog' chicks will roll away from the hens and root easily, to form new clusters of succulents. Typically green in the spring and summer, it takes on burgundy shades as the weather cools, adding a spot of color to container planters and hanging baskets in the fall and winter.
Sempervivums do surprisingly well in Pacific NW winters as long as they have good drainage, and do really well in gravelly, less than fertile soil. Otherwise, consider making a succulent planter, combining Hens and Chicks with sedums other plants with low-water needs such as echeverias.
