Jasminum nudiflorum

When folks are absolutely sick of the dark days of winter, plants such as Winter Jasmine give them a burst of color and hope for the arrival of spring. Small, bright yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers cover the long, bare arching stems before dark green trifoliate leaves appear. Consider using this deciduous shrub on hillsides or retaining walls, where the long stems can spread out and down into sprawling mounds that are almost twice as wide as they are tall. Be aware that Winter Jasmine may root where its stems touch the ground, so if one wants to control the spread of this specimen, prune stems back in early spring after flowering is complete. Winter Jasmine may also be trained up a trellis, where it can grow 10 to 15 feet tall.
