Folks tend to be a bit intimidated by the mature size of bigleaf hydrangeas, but when the entire plant is such a glorious combination of dark purple/black foliage and eye-catching clusters of red-edged, white blooms, the bigger the better. Depending upon the environment, you can expect this Eclipse® hydrangea to top out anywhere from three to five feet tall and wide. Grown in a large container planter, it will most likely be on the smaller side, and if planted in the ground, plan on giving it space to grow. Flowers bloom on both old and new wood, so prune Eclipse® back in the fall or late winter to keep the shrub dense and under control.
