Hosta 'Wide Brim'

Many folks with shade gardens will have at least one hosta in their yards, and thank goodness for the varieties available! 'Wide Brim' is a bold character with blue-green, slightly puckered leaves that are randomly edged in buttery yellow, adding a marvelous brightness to those shady corners of the garden. Averaging two feet tall and spreading up to three feet wide, 'Wide Brim' will bring out the hummingbirds with its stalks of lavender flowers in the summer. Once spent, removing the flowers will ensure better leaf growth. Slugs could be a problem, so consider spreading pet-friendly slug bait around the plants, or go for DIY remedies. One garden rebel swears that fairly thick applications of used coffee grounds around susceptible plants have kept them slug-free. Don't drink coffee? Apparently coffee shops are willing to share their used grounds.
