While colorful summer gardens are a joy to behold, they can be labor-intensive if one uses only annual plants. We encourage nursery visitors to consider incorporating perennials and evergreens into their container planters and hanging baskets, if only to simplify their lives. Plant it once, and it will keep coming back from year to year. If it gets too big for the container planter, move it out into the garden where it will add seasonal color and in the case of Sun Roses, year-round texture. 'Ben Ledi' sends up rose pink blooms in late spring to early summer, often blanketing the low-growing mound of lance-shaped leaves. Less than a foot tall, sun roses can spread up to two feet wide, and work well in rock gardens, xeriscapes, retaining walls, and cottage gardens. Drought tolerant once established, this sun-lover is evergreen, and is usually overlooked by deer and rabbits. A light shearing after blooming will keep the foliage need and tidy.
