Gaultheria shallon

Salal is one of those plants that takes on decidedly different forms, depending upon its environment. In its natural habitat under a high canopy of trees (think filtered shade), salal can become a dense shrub, seven to ten feet tall and almost as wide. However, when planted in a sunny location, it barely hits two feet in height, forming an attractive ground cover with pink, springtime, urn-shaped flowers that mature into edible black berries.

The leathery green leaves are evergreen, withstanding our Pacific NW weather with ease, and florists often use branches of salal in flower arrangements. Wildlife, including deer, appreciate the berries. We most often see salal used as a ground cover in Portland area gardens, providing year-round greenery.
