Just when the last summer flowers disappear, Wintergreen starts to strut its stuff with its festive fall and winter red berries and beautiful green and bronze foliage. A North American native, Wintergreen is a welcome addition to slightly shady spots in the garden, as well as in container planters, hanging baskets, and borders. The foliage has a year-round presence, green in the spring and summer, then taking on bronzy hues as the temperatures drop. Rabbits tend to avoid Wintergreen, though deer may nibble on the minty berries when other food sources are scarce. The berries are safe for human consumption, though the texture may not be especially pleasing.
