Gardenia jasminoides 'Veitchii'

We would love to be able to say that this variety of gardenia can be grown outside year-round in the Portland metro area, but experience has shown that 'Veitchii' just doesn't like our cold, wet winters. It does quite well outside during the summer months, putting out fragrant, rose-shaped flowers, but it really needs to move indoors during the fall and winter. Thankfully, 'Veitchii' takes well to container living, topping out around four feet tall and three feet wide, so it can be moved indoors (or to a heated greenhouse) to be enjoyed as a house plant until the weather warms up again. Give this gardenia lots of indirect light indoors, water thoroughly when the surface soil is dry, and watch for indoor pests such as spider mites.
