Fuchsia 'Army Nurse'

Many gardeners bemoan the fact that so many shade plants are perennials, strutting their stuff from spring until fall, then disappearing completely until the temperatures rise in the spring. While this is true, we contend that it gives gardens a fresh start each year, and when those perennials start popping up, it's like finding buried treasures. Hardy fuchsias such as 'Army Nurse' are a very welcome addition to shade gardens, coming back year after year with very little effort. Smaller in stature than some other hardy fuchsias, this variety forms a mound about two feet tall and wide, with red flowers opening to deep purple corollas. Consider growing 'Army Nurse' in a container planter, or put straight into the ground toward the front of shade borders. Hummingbirds and pollinators will visit often, enjoying the beautiful blooms as much as humans do!
