Fennel 'Bronze' 4 Inch

Bronze fennel is one of those perennial herbs that serves dual purposes, though gardeners tend to think of it as just an edible plant. Unlike green fennel, this variety doesn't form an edible bulb, but produces tall stalks of feathery bronze colored leaves that has that distinctive anise flavor. Growing up to five or six feet tall but with a narrow upright profile, bronze fennel is an attractive back-of-the-border plant, forming yellow flower heads in late summer. These attract butterflies and other pollinators to the garden, and the seed heads may be harvested for culinary and/or medicinal purposes. As fennel tends to self-sow easily, it may be beneficial to remove the flower heads before the seeds drop.

Harvest Time: Stems and leaves can be picked as needed. Harvest seed heads at end of summer and before freeze.
