Euphorbia x martinii

When visitors come to the nursery looking for evergreen shrubs, we do show them the different varieties of euphorbia, or spurge, that are available. The red colored varieties often go first, then the variegated ones such as 'Ascot Rainbow' or 'Tasmanian Tiger,' leaving behind 'Martin's Spurge' as the neglected stepchild. That's a shame because even this gray-green leafed variety has a surprise in store - springtime lime green flower bracts, often with purple eyes, that are absolutely alien looking. Talk about eye-catching! Pollinators love them, deer and rabbits, not so much. Drought tolerant once established, this sun-loving evergreen serves well as a low-growing border plant and provides year-round greenery in hanging baskets and container planters. One caveat: the sap of euphorbias is toxic and can cause skin irritation, so wear gloves when pruning them back after flowering.
