Euonymus alatus 'Compactus'

You know it's fall when this shrub's leaves morph from pale green to brilliant red, thus earning the moniker of Burning Bush. Also known as a Compact Winged Euonymus, "compact" is a relative term, as this variety can eventually mature into a dense rounded shrub, eight to ten feet tall and wide. It's best to grow a Burning Bush in urban gardens, away from pasturelands, open woodlands, and coastal scrubland, as it naturalizes readily and can crowd out native species.

This variety is often used as a spring-to-summer hedge, and adapts well to pruning. Slower growing than other euonymus, Burning Bush can also be used in container planters, in borders, and as a specimen in the home garden. Though this euonymus can handle some shade, full sun will bring out the best color in the fall.
