Echeveria 'Lolita'

Echeverias can be confusing to grow, especially if one thinks of them as the same as any other succulent. For instance, one would expect these to love full sun, which they do, but not at the hottest time of the day. We often consider them pest-free, but they can succumb to mealybugs and aphids. And unlike Hens & Chicks that die after flowering, echeverias will produce foot-tall flower stalks during the summer and will continue to live and grow.

Echeverias can grow outdoors as long as they are protected from freezing weather, and they have well-draining soil. However, they are not cold tolerant, so growing them in a heated area during the winter is preferable. Artificial or natural direct light will keep them compact and happy, as will thorough but infrequent watering when the top two inches of soil is dry.
