Dryopteris wallichiana 'Jurassic Gold'

Do not mistake the golden orange or yellow fronds of the Alpine Wood Fern as diseased or dying! New growth emerges in the spring in rich golden orange shades, then morphs to yellow, and finally green. Upright foliage can reach two feet in height, forming vase-shaped clumps that thrive in full- to dappled shade, or morning sun with afternoon shade. Though it prefers regular watering when first planted, 'Jurassic Gold' is somewhat drought-tolerant once established, and as is true of most ferns, deer tend to avoid it. Don't hesitate to add this to container planters or hanging baskets for wonderful spring color and all-season textural interest. It is also a wonderful middle-of-the border addition to the summer shade garden.
