Dryopteris austriaca 'Crispa Whiteside'

When talking to nursery visitors about ferns, many dismiss them as boring. With all due respect, we beg to differ, and point to the Broad Buckler Fern as an example. Triangular fronds have densely spaced, deeply serrated leaflets, creating a ruffled look. Add to that a slight twist, with the fronds forming an irregular, upright vase-shape that can grow two to four feet tall, and up to three feet wide at maturity. Of course, growing conditions will affect the size of this semi-evergreen fern, and that too is a difference. While many ferns are deciduous here in the Pacific NW, the Broad Buckler Fern may keep its unusual foliage in milder winters, so consider using this specimen as a foundation plant for the shade garden.
