Disporum 'Night Heron'

It's no surprise that this rather exotic and fascinating shade plant was found and developed by Dan Hinkley, the renowned Washington horticulturalist, on one of his trips to China. New growth emerges in the spring with black stems and bamboo-like leaves that eventually mature to green. White to yellow bell shaped flowers form at the tips of the stems in the spring, providing a dramatic contrast to the dark foliage. Semi-evergreen to evergreen here in the Pacific NW, this specimen can reach four to six feet in height and will eventually form a clump two feet (or more) wide. Stems that suffer damage in the winter months may be trimmed down to the ground in early spring, making way for the new black stems.
