Because most ferns prefer dappled sun when grown outdoors, we tend to assume they can handle low light indoors. As we have discovered in the nursery, most ferns grow better when placed in a well-lit room (no direct sun). This mahogany fern can eventually grow to three feet tall and about as wide, and is more likely to do so when given adequate light and higher humidity. New growth emerges in shades of red to bronze, then transforms to a deep green, eventually creating an upright vase shape. This fern will do fine in a mixed planter when small, but consider transplanting it into its own pot as it ages, where it can become a specimen-sized focal point in the indoor garden.
