Dianthus American Pie 'Berry a la Mode'

Dianthus may be considered old-fashioned these days, but there's good reason why gardeners still include them in their yards. Fragrant, perennial, and wonderful in bouquets, they add a bit of elegance to the garden. Deer and other critters don't care for their clove-like scent, but pollinators find them attractive. 'American Pie Berry a la Mode' is a great addition to container planters or hanging baskets, with its bright white petals and magenta-colored centers. Texturally different from most summer annuals with its upright blue-gray foliage, this dianthus can provide the height and focal point to mixed seasonal planters. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers, and a light shearing after the first round of flowers fade in mid-summer may result in a second round of flowers in the fall.
