Crocosmia 'Fire King'

Crocosmia, aka Montbretia, may come late to the party but what a glorious entrance they make at the height of summer. 'Fire King' has flashy orange buds that open to a vibrant red on stalks that stand two to three feet tall, amid sword-like, upright leaves. Taller varieties of crocosmia have an unfortunate habit of leaning over and often require staking, but 'Fire King' may be short enough ("only" two to three feet tall) to avoid the flop, given full sun. Drought tolerant once established in the ground, crocosmias will need regular watering if grown in container planters. Hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators love these late bloomers, but deer and rabbits tend to avoid them.
