Casual observers usually don't think about whether a tree can handle all-day hot sun, but increasing temperatures world-wide might change the way we select plants for our gardens. Samaritan Chinese Dogwood actually does better with some shade at the hottest time of the day, so it may be a perfect choice to plant near big conifers or on the east side of taller buildings. Slowly growing to 25 feet with a 20 foot spread, this dogwood has beautifully variegated foliage that emerges in the spring with a slight tinge of pink. The leaves eventually morph to a creamy white and green during the summer when the flowers appear, then take on burgundy and intense pink shades in the fall.
